Dave Mason was born on this day in 1946, in Worcester, England. Player of many stringed things, including the sitar, he is also a singer/songwriter and vocalist and a founding member of Traffic - "Feelin' Alright" was written by him - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIYLZOp_Bzc. Mr Mason has been associated with many other artists, including Paul McCartney, George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Fleetwood Mac, Cass Elliot and Jimi Hendrix. Incidentally, he plays the 12 string guitar on Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower”.

This has been his biggest solo hit to date, written by fellow touring band member at the time, the late Jim Krueger –

Jock Bartley was born on this day in 1950, in Hutchinson, Kansas, USA. A lead guitarist, he became a member of blues rock/fusion band Zephyr when Tommy Bolin, who had co-founded the band, left them … not easy shoes to fill! Bartley was on one album with Zephyr and then moved on to Firefall which he and Rick Roberts put together, and he’s been there ever since. Firefall was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame last year along with Poco, Stephen Stills and Manassas, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Jack Johnson was born on this day in 1975, on Oahu, Hawaii. Following in the footsteps of his father, he briefly turned pro surfer at the age of seventeen, a vocation he abandoned after having to get 150 stitches in his forehead and losing some teeth. He’s a family man, environmentalist, involved in all sorts of non-profit and philanthropic causes, and a singer/songwriter/musician of the acoustic folk/rock persuasion – no idea how he fits it all in; at least he walks his talk – no fakery – he genuinely seems to be one of the good guys.

His style is seriously laid back which is hardly surprising; last time I looked, he seemed to saunter on stage, mumble something inaudible and start strumming. He might’ve had some coaching since then.

Although his music will never set the world on fire, it’s easy and pleasant, and I doubt anyone would be able to feel totally miserable listening to what he serves up. He has a large and loyal following for his mostly happy fare (even when the subject is melancholy it doesn’t make you feel dire!), and he’s sometimes quite funny too. Great for road trips, in my experience ...

Bernard John Taupin was born on this day in 1950, in Lincolnshire, England. Known primarily for his outrageously successful songwriting partnership with Elton John, he released three solo albums and has written the odd song for others too.

This is from Bernie’s second album, He Who Rides the Tiger – “Venezuela” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFUjY20CqEU (Uh oh! Just noticed the visuals are someone’s wedding clip! Didn’t watch before posting - only listened.)

… and a seminal song for the duo - from Honky Chateau –

ROBERT ZIMMERMAN:
only the most influential person in the history of popular music according to Rolling Stone....
only has more albums on the Rolling Stone '500 greatest albums of all time' than any other artist (he has 11)....
only has the #1 song in the Rolling Stone "500 greatest songs of all time" list....
has only had more versions of his songs recorded than any other songwriter (other than Beatles)....

yep, im talking about Mr. Bob Dylan who turns 75 today....
he just released a new album this week and is still on his 25yr plus "never ending tour"!

from Bob, my favourite track of his:

John Illsley was born on this day in 1949, in Leicester, England. He and David Knopfler talked about forming a band (JI being a bass player and backing vocalist) and subsequently brought Mark and Pick Withers on board – we all know who ended up being the boss! Illsley and Mark Knopfler were ultimately the only two constant members of Dire Straits, and I had not heard any of the former’s solo material up to now.

He’s just released a new album – Long Shadows, which I’ve listened to with interest; first impressions, in places it sounds a bit like Roger Waters does Dire Straits which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, IMHO! If you liked the Dire Straits sound, there’s plenty of that in this, as well as in excerpts from other solo releases that I’ve listened to (MK and Chris White contribute to some of Illsley’s earlier albums so it’s a bit of a no-brainer, but it makes you wonder who actually created that distinctive Dire Straits sound – or was it all just a providential confluence??).

He doesn’t have a remarkable voice – at least, not anymore - it’s probably got gruffer with time, but the sound as a whole is pleasing and I’ll be exploring his back catalogue. Nice album artwork, and also that of the previous album, Testing the Water … good production too, I think …

The first track on Long Shadows is “Morning”, a stunning little instrumental, but I couldn’t find a clip, so next choice – beautiful visuals to go with “Close to the Edge” … (Simon Johnson on lead)

1958: JOHN PAUL WELLER:

born in Woking, Surrey, England....
formed The Jam when he was 15, eventually becoming the biggest band in the UK from 1980-82
when they split at their peak, their three singles in 1982 went to #1, #2 and #1 respectively in the UK charts,
they also had their only #1 album in the same year....
The Jam became only the second act at that time to have three separate #1 hits actually debut at #1 on the UK
charts
(the only other artist to do that to that point was Slade)..
Weller went on to form the eclectic Style Council, a band that recorded pop, soul, R+B, funk, blues, jazz, folk,
rap and what they called acid jazz/house which was dance music(precursor to EDM I guess),
at the end of the 1980s, Weller split TSC and went into obscurity for three years,
he came back in the early 1990s recording mainly, mainly R+B, folk, pop, alternative rock, blues and soul music.
the biggest selling album of his career came in 1995 with "Stanley Road",
by then a new generation of musicians were emerging from the UK in the likes of Oasis, Blur, Verve, Radiohead,
Portishead, Suede etc...all claimed Weller was their inspiration to pick up an instrument and start playing...
he has recorded with the likes of McCartney, Steve Winwood, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Dr.John etc...
he continues to be a force on the UK music scene and UK music charts to this day.
he has received the coverted "lifetime achievement award" from the BPI.
he has been offered an OBE and also a MBE from The Queen for services to British music, both of which he turned down.
here's one of my favourites from Mr.Paul Weller, a fantastic piano based love song, which incidently is used more
as bridal waltzes at UK weddings in the last 20years than any other song (well, coming second behind Robbie's "angels")

here it is...."you do something to me"
