On the laptop.

1971 debut album from Country-Rock outfit.

I've been drawn to this through my love of Grateful Dead music, since this was a more countryish outlet for Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, & Phil Lesh from the Dead.

They were all playing a backing role, and Garcia was indulging his love for playing the Lap Steel, as there wasn't much call for it in his day job. After this album, the Dead members returned to their main band, whilst the NROTPS continued without them for a number of years.

This is Country Rock skewed to the Country end of things, like frinstance The Flying Burrito Brothers/Gram Parsons.

Very good album, and there's an interesting Country take on The Band's The Weight.

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

Can't ignore a lead like this. Truth to tell I get lost with Panama Red and, well, you know...This is a live version but not a concert vid (more's the pity); some establishing shots * then concert stills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEnVBOHrBLM

* Nazareth, Pennsylvania is a nice smaller ag town in Amish country (other local burgs include Bethlehem and Intercourse). If you're in the Philadelphia area, it's well worth a day-trip or even an overnight in a B&B.

What a great find!--To hear a mature woman's point-of-view and knowledge/acceptance of herself. I could do with less subservience but in a weird kind of way, it's an agreement song (not an answer song) that great Mexican wedding song "La Bamba''). He asserts he's the captain and she's the crew *; in this, she gives up a measure of control for maybe a hint of permanency. Or am I over-thinking this?
* Check back in 5 years to see how that premise works out. Ho ho.
Here's another one by her--live in Austin--reasonable vid but under-recorded audio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNOipIP9Zg
Have I ranted lately about artists using an already-used song name? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WoD8yZkvuI

Lately im really into Andrew Jackson Jihad and his album Can't maintain but folk is not really my thing so im gradually getting into it, i luv his lyrics and the way he sings i like how his voice breaks at some parts, it's more emotional that it is refined and i like that. LxiDD Wrote:Completely different to anything I usually listen to - I met a guy called Joe O'Donnell recently who used to be in East of Eden back in the 70s. I also saw him play and he is a incredible violinist! Been listening to his album - Joe O'Donnell's Shkayla, am really liking it.

Don't dismiss him as an ethnic artist--listen to one of his tunes played by a Spanish/Catalan guitarist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkFrn-oi1GY Here's some others , easily translatable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQnBNpK3tbg << with Rory Gallagher and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ-wQwqquwo

rebelgirl Wrote: This is my favorite Tammy song. I can't get over how much "country music" has changed. It's a shame!! I saw Tammy's funeral on TV. It was so sad I cried. I saw her here when her songs like Stand By Your Man were really popular. Oh how I wish country would get back to it's roots!!

It has, it's just called Americana or Alt-Country or Progressive Folk (or even weird off-shoots like Goth-Country--at least they're talking about how folks in Meth America really feel, instead of how the N-Ville FatCats wish them to feel). The movers and shakers in Nashville have convinced America that what they're peddling (90% Pop-10% Country) is the New Real Thing. It started as fringe music for people you really didn't want to associate with but was transmogrified (when the money started flowing in) to the middle-market bland crap we have now. How else to explain Florida Georgia Line or Lady Antebellum? Zac Brown is considered "pushing the line"--they couldn't get a gig in Nashville in the old days. My dos centavos.
And then don't let's forget Bluegrass, an invented music from Appalachian Scotch-Irish mountain music. Even its modern iterations by such as New Grass Revival have authentic roots, phrasing and playing. There is recourse and resources for such as us--a little imagination, a little digging is all it takes to find the authentic.

But you get all those points back if you mention and quote from her album with Jack White--Van Lear Rose: Tell me JW et cie. weren't enraptured by this project--writing/playing with a legend who wanted, really wanted, to do this project--the ultimate stiffie.:
Remember, the outlanders did get electricity, and where that goes, radio/TV and electric guitars are soon to follow. Ask the Abos and the Maori about their country music and how it's changed...We aren't the only country with music from the country--we just figured out a way to capitalize on it. TMI, yes?
