Miriam Stockley was born on this day in 1962, in Johannesburg, South Africa. She and her sister (The Stockley Sisters) topped the SA charts with their cover of Shocking Blue’s “Venus” which they released in 1976, ten years before Banarama’s version; Miriam was 14 at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3plUXQfajRE

She has worked extensively as a session musician/collaborator/backing vocalist for, among others, Kylie Minogue, Elton John, Elaine Page, Brian May and Alphaville - she’s also released three solo albums, featured in some soundtracks, and is one of the core trio of members of world music group Aomusic, a non-profit ensemble that through AO Foundation International, contributes to the care of impoverished and disadvantaged children worldwide.

Miriam had moved to the UK in the early 80’s and ended up providing the ‘vocalise’ for the first four of Karl Jenkins’ Adiemus albums – this is probably quite familiar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX__4aHwYzM.

She toured with Mike Oldfield for the German Night of the Proms – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNl3S_eWP_w

And my personal favourite, “Perfect Day” from her first solo album Miriam which became the theme song for The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends which is how I got to hear it in the first place (as an adult, I hasten to add. Lol!) …

Jason Scheff was born on this day in 1962, in San Diego. He is the ‘new’ vocalist and bassist for Chicago – taking over from Peter Cetera in 1985. He’s also the son of well-known session bassist Jerry Scheff who regularly toured with Elvis Presley, which I guess translates into meaning he was away from his family a lot of the time.

Children really do have a different take on things – Jason used to see his father on the TV performing with Elvis and he thought his dad was the star; to him, Elvis was just a guy in a suit. How cool is that? Love it!

So – he wrote (co-wrote, strictly speaking) this one for Jerry …

Avishai Cohen was born on kibbutz Kabri, Israel on this day in 1970. Jazz bassist and composer who worked with Chick Corea for around six years before striking out on his own label, Razdaz Records. Prior to that he had done some serious pavement pounding and hard labour (in the form of construction work) in order to support himself whilst endeavouring to get heard. He got a lucky, although clearly well-deserved break through Mr Corea.

He’s interested in latin, pop, rock and funk all of which must add dimension to his music - great listening – love the middle and eastern European flavours that pop up in his work. This is from his album At Home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6vptqMYk3g

From his lovely album, Continuo – “Elli” …. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDuB8iLpv_s

… and “Come Together” as you’ve never heard it before! ….

Edwin “Eddie” Jobson was born on this day in England, in 1955. He’s been associated with various artists over the years; early on Curved Air and later, Brian Ferry, Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa and Yes, as well as ‘super group’ UK. He’s known for his prowess on the electric violin and his ability to arrange other stringed things, and he plays the piano and has done backing vocals.

Flying in the face of all the above expertise, he draws a great deal of admiration for his 1985 solo album “Theme of Secrets” which was created using not one single ‘real’ musical instrument. It was purportedly made entirely on early digital synthesizer and music workstation, the Synclavier.

IMHO, that admiration is not misplaced ... the lead track from the album –

Rod McKuen was born on this day in 1933, in California. Singer/songwriter, poet and composer. He was primarily responsible for introducing Jacques Brel to the English speaking world and it was he who adapted Brel’s “Le Moribond” and turned it into “Seasons in the Sun” which Terry Jacks then went on to make famous.

McKuen had what sounds like a horrifically traumatic early life, running away at the age of eleven and pretty much educating himself from then on. To move past all that to receiving Academy Award and Pullitzer Prize nominations (despite much criticism from the world of academia) is no mean feat; an interesting and resilient character who seems to have constantly reinvented himself. He died on 29 January 2015 at the age of 81.

From Wiki: “McKuen wrote over 1,500 songs, which have accounted for the sale of over 100 million records worldwide according to the Associated Press. His songs have been performed by such diverse artists as Robert Goulet, Glenn Yarbrough, Barbra Streisand, Perry Como, Petula Clark, Waylon Jennings, The Boston Pops, Chet Baker, Johnny Cash, Pete Fountain, Andy Williams, the Kingston Trio, Percy Faith, the London Philharmonic, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Mathis, Al Hirt, Greta Keller, and Frank Sinatra.”

Here’s the original sardonic ballad, “Le Moribond” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h02pNUKInBo

And Rod singing “Jean” –

Happy Birthday to Lou Gramm. He was born on this day in 1950, in Rochester, New York. He’s the lead vocalist for Foreigner as well as having penned/co-written some of their biggest hits.

From 4, which I listened to more times than I care to remember at a certain point in my music listening evolution … actually – hearing it again now I can see why - it was a good, solid rockin’ album, no doubt about it!–

Colin Bass was born on this day in 1951, in London, England. He is a bass player (how does that work? People and their names?! Although I suppose he might have been an angler or something equally fishy ….) and vocalist and keyboard player and composer. Known mostly for his ongoing stint with Camel, he was also a core member of world music group 3 Mustapha 3, and has made quite a few solo albums which I didn’t know about and which I now intend to investigate.

The title track from his 2015 album – At Wild End – pretty sure that’s Andy Latimer’s guitar I'm hearing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9zIchOB44g

He appears on seven Camel studio releases, starting with I Can See Your House From Here which is the perfect excuse to link “Ice” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS9g4Gpm6G8

And he does the lead vocal on what might well be my favourite of Camel’s songs – “Drafted” from Nude …

Philip Bailey was born on this day in 1951, in Denver, Colorado. He is an original member of Earth, Wind & Fire, and one of their two lead vocalists along with the late Maurice White. Philips is recognised for his falsetto and four octave range. He’s received a total of 8 Grammy Awards, one in his solo capacity and the balance with EW&T; this is one of the band’s top ten singles – apropos of Sgt Pepper’s …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKskYvTGEHE

… and he earned a Grammy nomination for this, which appears on his gold status solo album, Chinese Wall, with Phil Collins –
