Tony Allen - Ole (A Remix By Moritz von Oswald) from the Ole 12" [Honest Jon's Records, 2007]
Quote:Tony Allen played drums for Fela Kuti's Africa 70 and Egypt 80 organizations, pioneering the unique beat and vibe of Afrobeat music which combines polyrhythmic influences of Africa with the breakbeats and extended jams of the American funk and R&B which reached Nigeria in the late 60s and early 70s.

How did he attract a million fans to concerts but is almost unknown to present US audiences?

What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 16-11-2008

One problem he faces is that the spectacle of his live shows tends to grab the headlines, and I think more people are drawn to the spectacle than the music. The album above contains excerpts from audience interviews and media coverage which clearly demonstrate that many people attending clearly have no idea who they're watching.

I think he's clearly past his best these days, but back in the day he certainly played a small part in popularising "synthetic" music.
