There were two parts to Syd. He was an incredible musician, and he was also schizophrenic, according to many people. I don't know for sure... or maybe it was manic depression?

Syd Barrett was brilliant, he just so happened to go overboard and took way too much LSD. They didn't know the things we know now, that taking acid in those amounts can destroy you.
