Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 06-10-2012 Thought I would start this thread so we can have a look back at the tunes that make up Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. I would prefer to use a list rather than just throw my own out there, which would be rather biased. I'm sure Rolling Stone has it's haters, but their list is as relative as any. I haven't looked at this list other than to know what is #1. And I will not look ahead. I like the surprise each day. I figure this will keep me going for well over a year. You may get bored but I will not. I will post a youtube clip of each song, and will try and keep it to audio only. We are looking back at the song, not a video or a performance. Please feel free to join in the discussion, but stick to the songs that are posted. Love It? Hate It? Care to elaborate? The first one will be up shortly. Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 06-10-2012 #500 - Boston - More Than A Feeling - 1976 [video=youtube;iViNn9Fy-B4]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iViNn9Fy-B4[/video] me - *** Written by Tom Scholz Billboard Chart: #5 the band Tom Scholz - acoustic guitar, lead guitar, bass guitar Brad Delp - vocals Sib Hashian - drums VH1 has it as their 39th best hard rock song of all time. Never mind that the group did at least 30 other songs that sounded just like it. This was the original sound, fresh at the time. Their debut single from their debut album. An instant success. This song's main riff is referenced in the Nirvana single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Didn't know that little tidbit did you? See, isn't this fun? And how about according to Tom Scholz, this song is about "The thrill one gets while driving fast cars". And here I thought it was about love. The album went to #3 in the U.S. and #11 in the U.K. and has sold over 17 million copies. This song kicked it off. Looking Back At Some Classics - Jerome - 06-10-2012 Music Head Wrote:#500 - Boston - More Than A Feeling - 1976 This has been played to death on radio stations and I still love it. It just has a magical groove. Great music for the open road. How the hell did Brad Delp hit those high notes. Awesome track. And Tom Scholz developed his own foot pedals and outboard equipment for that unique guitar sound of his. (How many people noticed that the spaceships on the cover were upside down guitars?) About Brad Delp: Delp committed suicide on March 9, 2007, aged 55. He was found dead in his home on Academy Avenue in Atkinson, New Hampshire, from the smoke of two charcoal grills he lit inside his sealed master bathroom.[SUP][4][/SUP] Delp was found by police and Delp's fiancee together, lying on a pillow on his bathroom floor. Delp left private notes in an office to his fiancee Sullivan and all of his family members, plus a public note paper-clipped to his shirt which read: "Mr. Brad Delp. "J'ai une ame solitaire". I am a lonely soul." The French portion translates as "I have a lonely soul."[SUP][5][/SUP][SUP][6][/SUP][SUP][7][/SUP][SUP][8] [/SUP] Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-10-2012 like Jerome said...played to death on the radio but still love it... very good thread MH even if you did mind read me overnight....i was thinking that would be a good idea just yesterday...you know what they say about great minds, but not sure if that applies to us though? Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-10-2012 going back to Rolling Stone lists... i agree with most of their selections, as i do all other lists, but they are never perfect...simply a good guide for people to start exploring music they may have missed in the past and good place to start for young people IMO Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 07-10-2012 A powerhouse rock antthem by Boston ! very big up here in their day ! as for Rolling Stone ...I admire their "lists" as they change them from time to time....liking something later on and downgrading something that wasn't that great ! CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:going back to Rolling Stone lists... Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 07-10-2012 lol man do I feel stupid just found out I was using an outdated list damn amateurs sorry people I'm starting over if More Than A Feeling comes up again, I'll skip it Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 07-10-2012 #500 - Miracles - Shop Around - 1960 me - ** Written by Smokey Robinson & Berry Gordy Jr. Produced by Berry Gordy Jr. Billboard Charts: #2 pop, #1 r&b the group: Smokey Robinson - Lead vocals Marv Tarplin- Guitar Claudette Rogers Robinson- Background vocals Pete Moore - Background vocals Ronnie White - Background vocals Bobby Rogers - Background vocals Funk Brothers - other instrumentation This was before Smokey Robinson took over and the group was being billed as The Miracles. The first #1 hit for Motown. The group was inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame in 2006. The song depicts a mother giving her now-grown son advice about how to find a woman worthy of being a girlfriend or wife. The Captain & Tenille recorded this song in 1976 and it was #4 hit. It has also been covered by Johnny Ray (1961) and Georgie Fame (1964). Not my favorite song by the group but I do like it. I like the song but it's not my favorite from The Miracles as you also said MH. The inception of Motown Records....a record company that would propell rhythm and blues/soul into the mainstream of world music for decades to come ! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 08-10-2012 #499 - Weezer - Buddy Holly - 1994 me - *** Written by Rivers Cuomo Produced by Ric Ocasek Chart action: #2 Billboard Modern Rock, #12 UK Singles, #6 Canada the group: Rivers Cuomo – lead guitar, lead vocals Brian Bell – rhythm guitar, backing vocals Matt Sharp – bass guitar, backing vocals Patrick Wilson – percussion Did not know the Cars guy produced this. From the groups debut album, the second single (after Sweater Song). In addition to the title, Mary Tyler Moore also gets a shout out. Song was almost left off the album but a push from Ric changed Rivers mind. I thought the video for the song was cool in that it showed the band playing at Arnolds Drive-In, from Happy Days fame, giving it a 70's feel. Even had The Fonz dancing to the song. The video won 4 awards at MTV's annual event. I think that video probably made this song as successful as it was. Not knocking it, I love it, but the video certainly was an enhancement to the song. [video=youtube;Kjr7US2Z9aY]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjr7US2Z9aY[/video] Lyrics What's with these homies dissin' my girl? Why do they gotta front? What did we ever do to these guys That made them so violent? Woo-hoo, but you know I'm yours. Woo-hoo, and I know you're mine. Woo-hoo, and that's for all of time. [chorus] Woo-ee-oo, I look just like Buddy Holly. Oh-oh, and you're Mary Tyler Moore. I don't care what they say about us anyway. I don't care 'bout that. Don't you ever fear, I'm always near. I know that you need help. Your tongue is twisted, your eyes are slit. You need a guardian. Woo-hoo, and you know I'm yours. Woo-hoo, and I know you're mine. Woo-hoo, and that's for all of time. [chorus] I don't care 'bout that. Bang! Bang! Knock on the door, another big bang, get down on the floor. Oh No! What do we do? Don't look now but I lost my shoe. I can't run and I can't kick. What's a matter babe, are you feelin' sick? What's a matter, what's a matter, what's a matter you? What's a matter babe, are you feelin' blue? Oh-oh-oh! And that's for all of time. (x2) [chorus] I don't care 'bout that. (x3) |
