Ebola outbreak - Jerome - 17-09-2014 Sounds like this Ebola thing is now close to getting out of control - they are now predicting a doubling of the number of people infected every three weeks. Major sh*t on the way if that happens. Ebola outbreak - CRAZY-HORSE - 17-09-2014 its scary to say the least....! i'd hazard a guess to say Australia being so far from everywhere would probably be the last port of call for the virus... but with international travel the way it is i should retract that statement i guess... as a point of trivia for anyone who is interested.... Australia(apart from Antartica) is the only continent which has yet to be exposed to Rabies. Ebola outbreak - Jerome - 17-09-2014 Oz does a magnificent job of protecting it's natural environment. The rest of the world could learn a thing or two from you guys. Just as a matter of interest, do you guys have this 'fracking' industry in Oz? Ebola outbreak - CRAZY-HORSE - 17-09-2014 i dont really understand what "fracking" really is...just know its a relatively newish way to extract gas(am i correct?) i believe a couple of States(NSW/QLD) are doing it in small areas... our State Govt(WA) is thinking of doing it, but theres always huge protests when the subject comes up so we dont have it here yet, but its inevitable i guess... like i said, i dont really understand what it is,what it entails or what any longterm environmental damage would be, so i cant offer an opinion on it mate... since you brought up the subject of "fracking" maybe you could explain in laymans' terms for me what it actually is Ebola outbreak - Jerome - 17-09-2014 Essentially using high pressure water to crack up the bedrock and release the trapped gasses. But it also means the groundwater gets contaminated. You can compress a solid but not a liquid which is why they use water. Ebola outbreak - SteveO - 17-09-2014 Our province(state) has officially banned fracking! As for Ebola, our provincial chief medical officer stated today that Ebola coming to Canada is just a matter of time ....nice! The US is in the sweet spot in this technique--the bedrock is reasonably close to the surface and the seams to be cracked are horizontal. They have not had nearly the same results elsewhere. I too worry about the despoiling of the groundwater and subsequent damage to aquifers. There is also serious concern about induced earthquakes (this has already happened in Pennsylvania). Technology and greed have once again raced far ahead of long-view science and morality...another thing: the US Govt forbids petro exports; all this is for domestic use. This keeps petro profits high and fuel pump prices low, thus pacifiying the populace. However, most of that Northern Tier fuel is shipped by rail, thus crowding other uses of rail lines. All manner of ag shippers are suffering much higher prices and/or spot unavailibility of shipping options. The Federales are looking into it... I know you asked for the simpler explanation but couldn't let this go for those wishing to delve deeper.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_fracturing About the Ebola virus, I don't know what to think. Just girding my loins for the coming onslaught... Ebola outbreak - CRAZY-HORSE - 17-09-2014 Jerome Wrote:Essentially using high pressure water to crack up the bedrock and release the trapped gasses. Not retract it; modify it. Ebola may come in through a cruise port but it's much more likely to enter via a commercial port in the Northern Terriitories. Considering the shipping of Australian fossil fuels (coal) through those ports to China on Chinese/sketchy-provenance vessels, if those crew members are allowed on Aussie soil and allowed to mix with folks in Australia...This isn't a racist thing, it's a quarantine thing--that's how they kept rabies out. Ebola outbreak - jazzboCR - 18-09-2014 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:thanks.... I'd be care ful of using "WA' to mean Western Australia; the US considers that to mean Washington state. How about "WestOz" or some such? Changing times, changing audience. In this context, WA the state doesn't have much to say about it--it's up to the Federales. |
