what's up??!?! checking in to see what you all think of the cmj music marathon this year?? looks like they have some great shows and booths put together this year... i'm soo excited! what's been your fav. part/what are you looking forward to?
This is a kinda strange first post. I don't think its spam though.
I think you should explain to people what CMJ and CMJfest are. Most people on here probably do not know. We have a lot of people from outside the US and outside of college and/or radio.
I personally have not payed attention to the line-up since I won't be there.
CMJ is a music marathon and film festival held with shows, films and panels. It's held by College Music Journal in NY and is a great way for new bands to get going and some established acts come back to play shows.
I was there yesterday and met some really cool people. It's great... Everything from CMJ merch, free gifts, good shows all around the city, there is something for everyone....
Does Anyone know what it is??? or is anyone there???
I'm going to give another explanation. I'm not there this year because I'm not involved in college radio, not in nyc, and can't afford it. But I went in 2000 and 2001 when I worked for my college's radio station.
CMJ, or College Music Journal, is basically the Billboard magazine of college radio. It tracks what music is getting played on college radio and publishes charts. There is both a monthly magazine found on newstands everywhere and a weekly sent exclusively to college radio stations that submit their plays.
Once a year they hold CMJfest, a music festival, in New York City. Mostly the staff from hundreds (thousands?) of college radio stations attend along with music promoters. But I believe that public at large can purchase passes as well. There are panel discussions and booths in a hotel downtown for about four days. Every night there are dozens of concerts at venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. It has a very diverse lineup of many of the popular (and some unknown) artists in college radio from indie rock, rap, electronic, etc.
I really enjoyed it both years I attended.
