(NOTE: THIS IS PURELY MY OPINION, POSTED WITH THE INTENTION OF CAUSING A DEBATE/WHATEVER)
Why do people listen to pop music? I can't stand it. I find it repetitive, boring, lyrically and instrumentally talentless, and often poorly assembled. I had the FM radio taken out of my car in favor of an AUX line-in jack (to plug my PSP into). I can't stand radio pop.
I'm defining "pop" as:
-pretty much anything on the radio
-things like Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Kesha, Miley Cyrus, countless others
-one-hit wonders (for the most part)
-Britney Spears-ish things
-most rap/r&b (Beyonce-ish stuff, Kanye West, w/e)
anything you'd hear on the radio, from any time period.
I'd much rather listen to a half-hour song from Dream Theater; it's instrumentally brilliant, well-written, exciting, and entertaining, even if it's a little lyrically numb.
or Tool, which is totally out-there and weird, but still amazingly well put-together and full of talent.
The way I see it, anyone can sit in front of a keyboard, poke some notes, make a drum-machine beat, insert some "risque" lyrics, auto-tune (shudder) and make thousands of dollars - all while bands with actual TALENT are starting to disappear, because all the market money is going to "what the kids like".
I think "the kids" should be more educated about the wonders of the musical world, in ALL its facets...
or the radio/record labels should rethink their definition of "the kids"!!!
Why do YOU listen to pop music?
Where's the talent in it?
Will you give something else a try?
