Al Martino, the American singer who scored the UK's first number one record, has died at the age of 82.
'Here In My Heart’ was the first song to be registered on the New Musical Express chart in November 1952 where it remained for nine weeks.
Martino, was also immortalised in the 1972 film The Godfather, in which he played the crooner Johnny Fontane reports the BBC. It was a character said to be based on Frank Sinatra.
The former bricklayer's died at his childhood home in Philadelphia. His other hits included Spanish Eyes, Can't Help Falling in Love and Volare.
He performed at the London Palladium in 1952 and was apparently planning a return for the 50th anniversary of his original hit.
The nine-week run of his UK hit has since been beaten by only four singles, including Everything I Do (I Do It For You) by Bryan Adams, which topped the chart for 16 weeks in 1991.
Mr. Martino is survived by his wife, Judi, and three children: Al Cini, his son, and Alison Martino and Alana Cini, his daughters.
