is punk a real genre!?!?
is punk a real genre?? i know everybody is going to freak about this blatent comment but really punk isn't the music. if you look at punk today yu can classify it as rock punk, reggea punk, pop-punk, rap punk, etc. i mean can one genre really take all the genres and re-classify them because of lyrics and style? what the heck? lol. seriously.. you can't draw a line for this. it's just a grey area.
what do you think? and remember.. my idea is subjective and you may not particularly agree with me. just don't get all pissy about it.
Serial Under Achiever
As with any genre, the boundaries are entirely subjective.
Can Punk still serve as an umbrella genre ?? I think so...
If you were to ask me to define what's Punk, & what's not, I'd have my own opinions. They would be different to almost anyone else's.
"Punkrock" is a genre. "Hardcore Punk" (shortened form of hardcore punkrock) is a genre. "Ska-Punk" (meaning the inept attempts at ska by punkrock morons) is a genre, albeit a loathsome one. "Punk" by itself is not a genre, it's a way of doing things, more like a descriptive term than a genre.
And I sincerely hope that there aren't any bands actually performing a mixture of punkrock and reggae.
It's like any other music genre. It's hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it.
Why not? Punk rock is just faster. Plenty of punk rock bands are influenced by reggae and some go back and forth between the two. The Bad Brains come to mind.

Punk lost it's direction when people started considering it a Genre that had certain criteria... Punk is not a trend... it's NOT conforming to a sound... Nirvana was punk because during the reign of the hair-metal bands he decided not to go with the trend...
Punk will rise again... Just look at what's on the radio and MTV now... It's a bunch of trendy little whiners that focus more on their IMAGE than writing compelling music... even their music writing is becoming too f*cking trendy... if i hear one more "three days grace" sounding vocalist i'm going to shoot myself... same goes with the tween bands that wear more make-up than my sister... we're just repeating the 80's with all this glam-rock... soon a band will rise and they won't need the make-up to attract fans... their music will bring people to their feet again and all these sh*t bands will have nobody to imitate... cuz how do you imitate "good music" with no real talent...
that's is a great response.
