I actually listen to diverse genres of music not just one. I started listening to Nu - Metal music in middle school. I was curious of what this MTV music is all about and I decided to watch the TV and the first video that I watched was ‘Crawling’ by Linkin Park. I was first laughing when I first saw that because I was expecting like the Backstreet Boys, Nsync, or Britney Spears or something like that and I ended up seeing Chester Bennington screaming “Crawling in my skin…these wounds they will not heal…” I liked the song and I bought the Hybrid Theory album after that. Linkin Park opened up my interests in music and I started listening to System of a Down, Limp Bizkit,Evanescence, etc. ahh that was back then at 2000 when I was Grade 7. When I was in high school I have to take a music class and that’s when I started to play the saxophone at 14. I started playing in wind orchestras and that’s where I learned about jazz music. To make the long story short, I sucked at Gym and I was ok at Music and I liked it. But I am someone who likes rock music more and in 2003 when I was Grade 9 I saw a show called Metallica: Icon and I saw Limp Bizkit doing a cover of ‘Welcome Home (Sanitarium)’ and I was blown away with it.You might wonder why I’m still Grade 9 in 2003 but so many horrible things happened in my life. I always experienced bullying since grade school and I was physically abused by the authorities and none of it was my fault. It was a sad and unfair story; I was also placed in a foster home for a long time. When I got out of that place I watched that Metallica tribute show and was introduced to Metallica. I started listening to Metallica, Led Zepellin, AC/DC, Queen,Billy Talent, Three Days Grace, Joe Satriani, Ywngie Malmsteen, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Slipknot, Disturbed, Deftones, Korn, King Crimson, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Since I am into rock music it’s no surprise that I got into guitar. At that time I fell in love with a girl. Well later on I saw much more attractive girls so I didn’t go after her. So I started playing guitar at Christmas at the age of 15. I never joined any band because I wasn’t that good of a guitar player at that time and I was a loner. But I have a single friend in high school who is also autistic and he loves to watch Anime. Every lunch we always go to a room where all the autistic people are in the school and we would watch in the computer some Anime. His favourite show was Initial D and that show has Eurobeats in it. He also gave me CDs of Eurobeats and I have to say this music is not so bad, it’s actually good. A bit of a detour, I was also listening to hip – hop and rap. I listened to it more out of peer pressure because the popular people are listening to hip– hop like Usher and the gangsters and the hoodlums are listening to rap. Deep inside I never like hip – hop and rap but there are two artists that I like and that is Akil Dasan and Ludacris. I never liked Eminem. On the internet I discovered a band that did a cover of Metallica’s ‘Blackened’ and that band’s name was Between the Buried and Me. I didn’t get to listen to it because the stuff on MySpace is so hard to play, it’s always loading and at that time my computer is slow. Later on I got a laptop and a Galaxy Tablet. I could have bought an Ipad but that’s a different story. While I was in the music store trying to buy a Metallica CD, I stumbled upon Between the Buried and Me’s ‘Alaska’ album and I just flippantly bought it for no reason with the ‘Kill Em’ All’ Metallica CD.I listened to the first three songs at home and that was the first time I heard of screamo and death growls. I was ready to throw the CD in the garbage then I listened to the fourth song ‘Selkies: the Endless Obsession’ and I listened to the epic guitar solo and I keep on rewinding it a lot and I grew in love with the band. I later on found out that they have more of that good stuff. When I was almost getting out of high school, I was Grade 11 and we moved to a new church. The pastor was very autocratic and religiously strict. When he first got to know us, my mom showed him my collection of CDs and he rebuked my ‘Demonic’ rock music. I say this because this pastor is in Deliverance Ministry and he is known to cast out demons and spirits. I was able to witness a demonic manifestation myself and I got so scared. I said to myself I’ve been listening to all that rock music and there might be a demon in me. Fortunately, no demons in me but he asked me to throw away all my precious collection of CDs on which I said yes because of fear. So I stopped listening to rock music at that time. When I was Grade 12, my high school teacher told me that I am not good enough for university. I actually followed what he said and I settled in college. At that time I didn’t know what to do and what career I will do (except to become famous, listening to all that music has a tendency to give you day dreams.) so I just picked out a music course in college. Fortunately, I was able to pick the right college which is Canada Christian College and I didn’t need to audition. They just need to know if you’re Christian or not. When I was in college I was very Christian and religiously devoted because of that autocratic pastor and I was also studying in a Bible College. To be honest with you I find Christian Music to be very boring even the Contemporary Christian Music I don’t like so much. I liked some Christian songs but they are never sung in church. I just like the groove or something. I was also going to Christian Conferences and I was awe inspired by the musicians playing. Everyone is focused on the Christian anointing stuff while I was focused on the music. My favourite Christian band that I like is Isaiah Six, a band that I discovered while going to all those Christian Conferences. I was able to go to more secular gigs later on but it’s just normal to me now. While in the college, it was obvious that I was going to get a guitar teacher for my applied music. I will mention the guitar professor later on. While in the college I was required to take a keyboard class and while doing keyboard the teacher noticed me and told me that I can play piano. So she taught me how to sight – read and all the techniques and I became a piano player at the age of 20. One day I got bored and I decided to watch The Lion King Movie in DVD. I loved Disney Movies when I was a kid but Disney is too gay for the mean kids so I stopped watching. But I already got out of high school and I was seeing those types of kids less and less. Is it just me but since I got out of high school the girls are getting more attractive every year. I have to say that the most beautiful types of girls are blonde girls. I like the hair colour and would love to marry one. I watched The Lion King and watched it with a different sense. I love the soundtrack of that movie and after that there is a special edition of the making of The Lion King and that’s when I first discovered Hans Zimmer. I also listened to Alan Menken, James Horner, etc. I was into Soundtrack Music and it was my diversion from Rock music. I never bothered to type and listen to the rock bands because of fear.At that time I got my G2 Driver’s license. In Canada you have to do a G1, G2,and a G. Also at this time I got my Saxophone lessons. I was happy that I was driving by myself but that celebration was short – lived as my Grandfather died of Cancer, he was 77. I also stopped all my lessons at that time. It was a devastating time for our family and the autocratic pastor did nothing to help. Also at this time I was taking my last Guitar lessons with my Professor and he invited me to his church. I told him that my Grandpa is in the hospital and at least he is able to help. He visited my Grandpa and he was able to help. During my Grandfather’s funeral that was the first time I discovered that the professor was a music pastor in a non – denominational church. During the funeral I did like a sax rendition or something, I played like a high – pitched note and I didn’t like it but no one noticed. My mom liked the pastor and after my Grandfather or my Mom’s Dad is buried, we moved to his church. I liked his preaching and he doesn’t preach condemnation, (the autocratic pastor teaches condemnation) and his preaching is simple and theologically correct. While in college, I have to do Music History and this was the first time I learned about the life of Beethoven and other composers and I got into Classical Music and this was the time that I first discovered that I have a photographic memory and I didn’t use it while I was in High School. I am a bit of a late bloomer in Academics because I was getting 80’s and 90’s, A’s, and B’s more in College. Because of my good marks in college, I actually have a shot to go to take my Master’s in University. Oh, I am not done there I will study further abroad and take my Doctorate. I am graduating this year and I plan to take my G next year. Because I was inspired by the life of Beethoven that I was practicing my jazz scales on the guitar and I started playing some simple melodies and I ended up starting to improvise and compose. I also took a songwriting course in the college and I learned how to write a song. I am right now taking composition lessons and we are right now learning harmony, then after that we will be learning counterpoint. I learned about counterpoint when I was studying the life and works of Bach, I first discovered that Music is like mathematics and there are rules governing the music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and etc. I learned that counterpoint will give you unlimited melodic ideas and it will make your music sound good. So I’m excited. Since I am into Classical Music and Soundtrack Music, I started to have interests on the violin and the clarinet. Now I have Piano and Violin Lessons. Also at this time I am taking Music Ensemble Classes and I was in awe that my classmates can play music spontaneously without looking at a Chord Chart. They can play gospel music so good and I was into that. I love the sound of the chords. I wanted to learn that myself following my Ear Training Classes and that’s the first time I discovered Perfect Pitch and Relative Pitch. I am right now learning the scale degrees at Ear Training HQ and I believe Perfect Pitch can be developed and you don’t have to be necessarily born with it. I am someone who started with no Perfect Pitch and I learned the individual notes like scale degrees. Well I still suck when three or more tones are played at one time. But I am decent when two notes are played at one time. Who knows it will get better over time. One day I was in the church and it’s a small, new church so there are not enough musicians and vocalists. And I was listening to this drummer kid and his drumming was so off – beat. I felt sorry for my pastor, he deserves a better drummer. So I talked with the pastor and he taught some simple drum beats. He taught me some variations but that was about it and I became the church drummer. But later on my drumming got a bit predictable and I was demoted to play the bass. I was able to play the bass by looking at the bass note of the keyboardist’s left hand and that’s when I figured out the chords. I play lead guitar and saxophone sometimes on special occasions. It’s such a shame I have to keep asking what key the song is in while my pastor and the keyboardist and sometimes the guitarist already knows it by ear. Later on I want to have drums, guitar, bass, saxophone, and vocal lessons. It is pricey, that's why I am not asking my mom right now and I am looking for a job to pay for the lessons. We have been on my music pastor’s church ever since. I was able to loosen up from all my religious pretentions and I started to be in the world again. Not in a bad way but I have a more open mind. The college and the autocratic pastor really brainwashed me to be closer to Jesus which I am but not too much focused on religious stuff. I love God, I love Jesus Christ. He is my Saviour. One day I was bored and I still missed my rock music. I wasn’t craving on it for a while but then the craving got worst. Then I got the courage to type in Youtube, ‘Selkies: the Endless Obsession’ and god how I missed that song and what about that…phew!...No demons!.. Lol! I am free in Jesus’ name. Then I started to listen to rock music again and now I am using the internet to search for new bands. I recently discovered an artist named Merzbow and my bands and artists are getting weirder every year.Okay that is basically almost my life story and what serendipities will I discover today. In my life I ended up listening to a diverse range of music and absorbing what’s good in it. I still want to be famous so I will see what will happen to me in a few years. I hoped you like my story of myself and music.
