PAUL WELLER "sonik kicks"
firstly, it is so dissapointing when any artist who has been around for 35+ years who has released
22 studio albums, countless best ofs,and numerous live albums, inexcess of 75 singles and countless other
"featuring..." spots on other singles and albums comes up with possibly the worst album of his career,
unfortunately for me ive now had two of my favourites do that already this year and its only march!
ok, down to business...
the music is pretty "out there" as far as Paul Weller albums goes, theres touches of 1970s Krautrock, experimental Bowie
type material,psuedo-psychadelia and touches of Gary Numan type electronica sounds....not what i particularly want to hear from Paul Weller and
apparently that all adds up to what he calls Sonik Kicks....someone should have kicked his ass in the studio and told him "not to do that shit!"
sure there are Weller's usual styles in here also but they are pretty indistinguishable unless you are a die-hard fan like myself.
six of the fourteen tracks are total crap IMO, with most of the remaining eight tracks just scraping in for an initial "like" score, and only two or three
could be called genuine "like" tracks, unfortunately for me, the lead off single "that dangerous age" is not one of the like tracks.
call me stupid but as a die-hard fan i will be purchasing this one to keep my PW collection complete and had it not been for that
then this would not be purchaesd.
no doubt all the music press in the UK will praise this album for its "out there" style and its sure to debut at #1 over there in the next week or so
but dont be fooled this album doesnt deserve a place in the top 50 anywhere!.
so after the Macca album and the Weller one being crap, i sure hope that the Neil Young & Crazy Horse one due out at years end is better than these
or i may have to quit music altogether!
my rating for the album 1.6
and i think i may be being generous at that!
