    Mine:

    - Sex Pistols.

They burned bright but briefly, made great copy, made the classic punk album (IMO), and had an OD. What more could you ask for ??

    - The Clash.

I think only their first album is truly punk, but a reasonably lengthed career was filled with classic music.

    - The Ramones.

    Dumb & glorious.

    - The Damned.

The only one of these bands so far that I've seen live, and they were sublime.

    - Siouxsie & The Banshees.

A great band, and one of my favourites. Seen these live also, and they're one of rock's finest bands.

So, most of the above are UK based, and all of them prove that having limitted musical ability is no impediment to making great music.

great songs like fat lip wich is a complete hard core pink song talking about hating parents and being different wats more punk then that. they also have with me arguably the best punk ballet ever in too deep, peices, hell song, and my personal favorite over my head better off dead because it basically puts my life in to one song
2; green day i like green day but have 1 problem with them the whole fact they changed their name and added 3 more people because the sucsess of 1 album they couldnt remember the good old days with nimrod and dookie all in all a good band with killer songs
3; simple plan a great band with good songs like shut up, i'd do anything, when im gone, and your love is a lie
4; good charlotte they have good albums like the young and the hopeless and good morning revival and great songs like dance floor anthem, the anthem, the river, lifestyles of the rich and famous, boys & girls, and the young and the hopeless
5; my chemical romance a good band with good songs like teenagers, welcome to the black parade, helena, im not ok (i promise), and dead

Those bands are about as punk as an Oregon yuppie with a Che Guevara shirt. My favorite punk bands are Black Flag, The Birthday Party, Jesus Lizard, Joy Division... And these are either hardcore or post punk. I don't really listen to much punk in all honesty.

    My list would include:

    1. The Clash
    2. Black Flag
    3. The Sex Pistols
    4. The Damned
    5. Generation X

Honorable mention: The Ramones, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Misfits and Germs.
If you can't be a wonderful example, be a horrifying reminder.

You are right when you say they're just mentioning older punk bands. But it could be argued that punk rock ended around 1980. Everything afterwards is some derivative - post-punk, hardcore, pop-punk, new wave, etc.

All the bands you list are punk-pop bands. Most purists don't consider them true punk rock. They're a MTV/TRL version of punk rock.

People get very defensive over the whole thing. It's as bad with punks as it is with metalheads. I think the whole thing is rather silly and stay out of it. I don't even listen to the stuff anymore.
